3 But Jonah ran away from the LORD and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port. Jonah 1:3
So Jonah decided to run. Not all that surprising. We’ve all tried it in some form or another. A race away from God is a common event. Jonah decides to run to the city of Tarshish and we’ll probably chat more about this running as we go. This morning though I am reminded that nobody ever makes it to Tarshish. The city of Tarshish is mentioned something like 30 times in the Scripture and yet today no one is aware of its location. So what is it for you? What is it that looks better than God’s plan? When I think back on my life and the times when I’ve run with all my might from God I realize I never made it to my destination.
The power stays far off, the money never satisfies, the drugs lose their appeal, the wrong relationship stays wrong…Tarshish is like the carrot on a string that is always tempting but can never be reached. We can’t and won’t ever find what we’re looking for in any form of Tarshish, my guess is we’ll keep trying but Jonah’s story could help us to unload that pattern, to forsake Tarshish and chase into the wind of God rather than against it.
